Substance abuse exam ordered for nurse fired for drug diversion, useSPRING LAKE MI — A Spring Lake woman has had her nursing license suspended and been ordered by the state Board of Nursing to undergo substance abuse evaluation.

Jessica Leigh Pittman, a registered nurse, was fired from Great Lakes Specialty Hospital, also known as Select Specialty Hospital, in Muskegon in August 2015 for suspected drug diversion and a positive drug screen for amphetamine, according to an administrative complaint against Pittman filed in June.

As a result, the state’s Bureau of Professional Licensing twice – in October 2015 and in January 2016 –referred Pittman for substance abuse evaluation and possible treatment, according to the complaint. However, on both occasions Pittman failed to complete the intake process with the state’s Health Professional Recovery Program, the complaint states.

When Pittman failed to respond to the complaint, she was referred to the nursing board’s disciplinary subcommittee, which ordered Pittman’s license suspended for one day, allowing for it to be automatically reinstated once she completes the evaluation, begins any treatment and monitoring she is ordered to receive and is determined to be safe to practice by the recovery program, according to a final order issued Oct. 7.

Pittman could not be reached for comment.

If it takes longer than six months to accomplish the requirements, then Pittman must formally apply for reinstatement of her registered nurse license.

Pittman also was fined $250, placed on probation for two to five years and ordered to inform any future employer of the administrative complaint and final order against her.

Great Lakes Specialty Hospital operates as Select Specialty Hospital on the second and third floors of Mercy Health Muskegon’s Hackley Campus, 1700 Clinton St. It provides long-term acute care for patients, many of whom need time to recover after emerging from critical care.

“Knowing that the problem of addiction crawls into places we have never expected is frightening.  A hospital is supposed to a safe haven.  I had the pleasure of knowing a doctor was drinking 12-24 bottles of cough medicine a day to cope with his seriousness responsibility with acute care.  At that point, I didn’t even know cough syrup could be abused.  I wish Pittman, the hospital and their clients work together to help create better accountability for all of us,” commented Tyler Cornell, CEO of TOCCALife.com.
